Mythos & Marginalia

life notes; flaws and all

a daily breath...

A thought du jour, my daily breath includes collected and conceived observations, questions of life, fortune cookie philosophies, reminders, messages of peace and simplicity, unsolicited advice, inspirations, quotes and words that got me thinking. They may get you thinking too . . .

I'm like a pencil;
sometimes sharp,
most days
well-rounded,
other times
dull or
occasionally
broken.
Still I write.

as long as you keep moving

flurries
snow or rain and
likely sleet
lit up by headlights
and wistful thought
scream by
the other side of
the windshield
the inner side
your self a blur
all you want to do
is drive

straight ahead
no familiar destination
nowhere
are you wanted
are you needed
an unfamiliar road
snow caught up
in the slipstream
memories
as long as you keep
moving
they will not rest

you cannot
go home to
what is or what is not
not there and
neither are
you
you think you know
cold
flying faster than
before
all you want to do
is drive

This month is all about poetry.
Something new every day.

We all want more from each day
than the one before. Not
out of greed, but more of need
to keep us moving forward.

More sunshine, and more moonlight,
evermore falling stars, more
listening, more understanding,
more letters from afar.

Soft glances, smiles and laughter,
more silence than before;
not the quiet that haunts you,
it’s restful and its more.

More opportunities to do the things
you don’t do now, as much.
More inspiration and motivation,
and more excuses not to rush.

A more mindful attempt at moderation,
a more conscious effort at rejuvenation.
All about self-realization, more
confidence now and not alienation.

More self-respect and self-reliance,
more tolerance of your ways;
remind yourself of all your worth
and do it every day.

A little more faith in what you can do,
as much as anything else, more
patience with those around you,
and especially with your self.

More pencils, fewer erasers, make
new lessons of your mistakes. Reward
yourself with what brings you joy
or slice of chocolate cake.

More care, but far less caution,
better judgment along the way,
try to be a better person, try
to make someone else’s day.

More time, more days, more getaways
with those you’ve come to love.
More seconds, minutes and hours
for all of the above.

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana

just a boy

it was his eyes
versions of them
staring out
or lashing out
from various points
of his
short-lived career
a few photographs
still move me
like his music
rarely-seen glimpses
of a boy
struggling to be a man

fighting an image
of what people wanted
him
to be
he was
just a boy
his lyrics spoke to
a generation much younger
and they spoke to me.
he was
not much younger
than i

he will never grow to be
as old as me
he will not
grow old
as I will
he was
as strong as
he could be
not strong enough
to deal with
a 24-hour news cycle
still in its infancy

as much as he
obtained fame
he fought to dismiss it
he could not have lived
in a world where
each phone was a camera
each person carried a camera
like a gun
he was just a boy who could
not have taken
more attention
he was fragile

he could not handle
all that he had
he was
a poet
lived his words
and died
among them
music always lives on
not the musician
he
made us think
we still do

“I really miss being able to blend in with people.”
