a daily breath...

A thought du jour, my daily breath includes collected and conceived observations, questions of life, fortune cookie philosophies, reminders, messages of peace and simplicity, unsolicited advice, inspirations, quotes and words that got me thinking. They may get you thinking too . . .

I'm like a pencil;
sometimes sharp,
most days
well-rounded,
other times
dull or
occasionally
broken.
Still I write.

Environment For Sleep
Posted on March 4, 2017 by j.g.lewisLeave a comment

Your bed is a sanctuary, the one place you should be able to count on to refresh your soul and give your body the nourishing rest it deserves. So much more can be accomplished on a good night’s sleep and your mattress, the pillows & bedding, all play a part in the comfort required to sleep and dream fully.
Create an environment for sleep and for dreaming. This goes well past the physical space where you rest your weary bones. The temperature and sounds within the room will all influence how well and how deeply you sleep.
The television, at least in the bedroom, can clutter your mind, as will all the computer devices we have come to rely upon. Try to remove all technology from the place where you sleep. It’s important to take away all distractions, and availability to media can be one of the hardest habits to step away from, even the radio. While music can soothe the savage beast, it can also become another distraction. Don’t let the noise steal your peace. If you are in the habit of falling off to sleep with the radio (or television) on, try for a week or two to go without.
You mind will react differently to new sounds, or the total absence of sound. Earplugs? Many people will use the soft pliable plugs to physically block out the sounds that sneak into the mind and disrupt sleep, and thought flow.
Depending on time, and the demands on your time, the consistency of your bedtime routine can be extremely important to full rest. Take the time to make it ‘mine’.

Mind Your Mind

The mind is a huge sponge, each second of every day processing information, sights and sounds, directing you through tasks involved in everyday living. In all the excitement, though every activity, bits and pieces become trapped in your psyche. Some of this information is forgotten, or put aside, other times the residue of all the activity affects your nocturnal or unconscious thought.
The human will is an amazing thing. It can guide you to success, steer you through adversity, or just help you cope with what life throws at you. Willpower works through the daylight hours, but can also mold dreams and visions. Like any activity (music, yoga, art, science, theology) dreaming takes learning and practice. With some effort, and most of it done while you sleep, you are able to empower yourself by channeling your beliefs.

Bedtime Stories
Posted on March 2, 2017 by j.g.lewisLeave a comment

One of my greatest memories, both as a child and a parent, is story time.
Right before bed, freshly bathed and all snuggled in, the time spent sharing a story is a ritual that began with my mother, and then continued with my daughter when I became a parent.
A bedtime story is one of those traditions that grows with you from childhood on up. For many of us, time spent reading a book before bed is the relaxing way to traverse from day into night. A good book can fire up the imagination and fuel dreams, while others can put you to sleep (and I mean that in a good way).
Another tradition is sharing the same childhood favorites from generation to generation. Today, March 2, we celebrate the memory of the most fabulous authors, Theodore Seuss Geisel.
The man brought smiles and laughter to homes across the planet with classics like Cat In The Hat, Fox In Socks and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Outside of nursery rhymes, Dr. Seuss was probably the introduction to poetry for many, many people. His books and tales shared between parents and children helped launch a lifetime love of literature over and over again.
A great way to say Good Night.
