life notes; flaws and all

a daily breath...

A thought du jour, my daily breath includes collected and conceived observations, questions of life, fortune cookie philosophies, reminders, messages of peace and simplicity, unsolicited advice, inspirations, quotes and words that got me thinking. They may get you thinking too . . .

I'm like a pencil;
sometimes sharp,
most days
well-rounded,
other times
dull or
occasionally
broken.
Still I write.

Retrospect

We remember so much,
for so long, until we don’t.
The further we get from
an event, place or person,
the more we rely on memory.
Moments will fade from our
mind, people come and go.
What remains are emotions
that sometime escape us.
Once they consumed us.
Take the time to remember.
Try to write it down.
Memory can be fleeting.
Details are important

Poignant Promise
Posted on October 3, 2020 by j.g.lewisLeave a comment

Scrappy branches of barren trees
scratch against October’s crisp cobalt sky.
Moonlight
and a mother’s bedroom lamp
paint screaming banshees
across the front lawn.
Winds heighten
to an eerie squeal.
She leans in, pulling a safety pin
from her ear.
Tussled hair, the scent of patchouli
and cigarettes. Her lips
taste of the night.
A safety pin punctures the
denim jacket’s collar.
Forever.
A poignant promise
from a shadow too young to notice,
not old enough to know.
Long ago.
Still, now,
I wear a safety pin on my jacket,
if only to remember the taste of the night,
and the smell of autumn.

day-to-day inconveniences
Posted on October 2, 2020 by j.g.lewisLeave a comment

How do you sleep at night?
Are you comfortable? Do you
feel safe? Did you lay in bed
and listen to the sounds of the
gentle rain, or did late night news
have you considering how fragile
this society has become. Maybe
you were restless and thinking the
mortgage payment might bounce, or
car payment? Were you wondering
where your child was, or if the
forecast might change plans for
Sunday’s golf game? There is so
little of this summer-like weather
remaining. Have you noticed the
chill as you open the car window
to pick up your morning coffee?
Do you feel guilty about the caloric
count of that extra donut? Did you
pack a lunch, or will you order in
or take-away. Did you wake up
refreshed and ready to tackle the
difficulties at work, you know, the
issues of which we often complain?
Can you think of things you would
rather be doing? Are you planning
ahead, past these day-to-day
inconveniences, or are you okay
living with the changes imposed
on all of us? How are you affected
by injustice and inequality, or is it
somebody else’s problem? Are you
wearing a mask to protect others
and your self? We all should feel
the impact of what life is throwing
at us. Do you understand we all
feel it differently? Or is that any
of your concern? Shouldn’t it be?
