It’s Grey Cup day in Canada, the end of the CFL football season where the top teams from East and West battle it out for the championship title.
I’m not what you’d call a die-hard football fan, but the team I grew up following has made it to the championship game consistently over the past four years (in 2020 the pandemic wiped out the game and the season).
Today, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will go up against the Montreal Alouettes.
Winnipeg was once my home, so today a feel a particular allegiance to the city and its players. I’m even proudly wearing my team hat (I have been all week).
Go Bombers Go!
The team, last year, was shut out of a three-peat when my current city, Toronto, eked out an upset win by one single point.
Since then, Winnipeg has been playing with the utmost determination and has turned in an enviable season. This year, again, there are high hopes.
Hope, as much as talent, drives any game.
But, most times, the teams with the best players win. Time and time again this has been proven, in any sport.
While I can boast that Winnipeg has made it to the title game more times in the 110-year league history than any other team, it has also lost the season more years than not. Toronto Argonauts are still the winningest team, in league history, capturing the sacred cup most often.
Thus, historically, that makes Winnipeg the biggest losers.
But today, of all days, we true fans hope for a better outcome.

Guilt is an ugly word, cut from the bowels of misfortune, unheralded moments of indecent reflection, dampened ambition and passive apprehension.
What we carry and where it remains is always uncertain.
When it shows its despicable, yet familiar, face cannot be determined.
Guilt is felt before it shows itself.
