Mythos & Marginalia

2015 – 2025: a decade of days

  • Songs That Meant Something

It has been decades since I rushed out to purchase a new Bruce Springsteen album, but I did yesterday. I caught a whiff of a couple of the tunes from Only The Strong Survive on social media over the past month and it just sounded right.
The last time I was genuinely excited about new Springsteen material was 1980’s The River. The album, still a favourite, was before the American musician’s career took off to the heights we now know it. This was before Born in the U.S.A., before mainstream radio overplayed his music to tiring proportions.
The new album is Springsteen’s pandemic project, a collection of rich soul and r+b covers from mainly ‘60s radio; songs that meant something to the man as he was just starting out.
       It is delightful.
It’s, by no means, a typical Springsteen album with backing by the E Street Band, and his voice is right up front. It’s a strong voice for a 73-year-old man who understands its capacity, and its limits. It is honest and full of the character the material needs.
Most of the songs were popular on the radio in their time, but they are timeless and the entire album is well worth a listen.

  • Remember

    Don’t forget to remember
    those who fought, and died,
    for the freedoms we now
    seem to take for granted.
    Remember why we have
what we have, on this day
    and every day. Remember.

  • Mondays are just young Fridays

It is the moments before, the time preceding the fraction of a second, that actually makes up a photograph.
It is crucial time, measured more in thought than light and colour, where movement ceases or is silent for a mere moment before time stands still.
It may be only a moment, but that scant period of time is made up of years of practice and observation. Choices are made: focal length and shutter speed, aperture and intention; how much or how little light goes into each photograph?
Only you will know if the results are what you thought they would be, at the time and in those moments (and years) leading up to that fraction of a second.
I have been, since June, adapting all I know about photography onto my newest camera.
Technologically superior to each camera I have previously owned, my new camera is a challenge that is as much exciting as intimidating. This is the seventh camera I have owned in my lifetime, and each has served me well.
The format has changed from film to digital but the fundamentals remain.
I have to remember, in this era of automation and artificial intelligence, that I, as the photographer, must maintain control of composition, and thought, and outcome.
Now, as I was before, I remain entranced by the magic of photography and what you can do with light and determination.
I have learned so much over the decades, but have so much more to learn. If nothing else, that is the reason to continue to explore image and substance, and the magic of photography.

  • Passing Time

    The sleep, the time,
    the daylight we have gained
    will only be taken back.
    In the spring we lose,
in the fall we gain, a practice
    we continue, again and again.
    Will our lives change much
    over a meagre hour?
    Does time have its place,
    its privilege, or power
    to disrupt emotions;
what is yours or what’s mine?
    Will it make
    any real difference?

  • contentment

    even the night
    holds promise
    even as you wake
    even impeding daylight
    holds secrets
    you won’t admit

    even the colours
    provide comfort
    even in the darkness
even if it won’t last long
    contentment
    if only for a moment
